About this print

The Vault take

This Ana Inciardi mini print captures the New York City subway system rendered in a hand-drawn style that closely resembles the familiar MTA map. The composition shows the borough of Manhattan along with portions of the surrounding transit network, with thin colored lines representing the various train routes threading through a cream-toned street grid. Water appears in blue along the edges, and a patch of green near the top suggests Central Park.

The line work is done in warm browns, tans, and muted yellows, with a few red markings scattered through the lower section of the map. The New York City subway is one of the oldest and largest rapid transit systems in the world, with over 400 stations serving the five boroughs. The iconic map format has been a recognizable piece of design since Massimo Vignelli's influential 1972 version reshaped how riders understood the system.

Collectors are drawn to this print for the way it distills something monumental into something intimate and handmade. The city grid rendered in Inciardi's loose, personal line work gives a well-known graphic object a completely different emotional register, personal rather than institutional. This is a strong New York print that pairs naturally with her other New York city scenes, and collectors building a New York-themed grouping often seek it as a centerpiece.

The small format concentrates the visual complexity of the map into something surprisingly dense and satisfying, which is characteristic of how Inciardi works across her catalog.
